Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay quickly was captivated after showing her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of the power of art as an instrument for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma be the inspiration for her later the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her university. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of a particular juror. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a new publicist at a studio. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
